                                                        Cut
                                             By Sylvia Plath

In the poem "Cut" by Sylvia Plath its about a woman who cut off her thumb while chopping an onion. the woman appears quite strange because she is excited and thrilled to have cut her thumb off. some techniques used are similes, mood swings throughout the poem and creating images in your mind by using metaphors.

Similes were used quite frequently throughout the poem and created an image in our heads referring to the simile. A simile used in "Cut" is "flap like a hat". this quote is referring to the thumb and describing what it now looks like after being sliced. there is just a small piece of skin flapping over the thumb stump looking like a bit of a hat.

Metaphors are once again used to portray an image from the text, giving us a good idea of what's happening in the poem. An affective metaphor used is "a million soldiers run, redcoats everyone". This metaphor is affective because the quote is putting the image of  blood pouring out the woman's thumb. Plath says "A million soldiers" to show how much blood is pouring out the woman and "Redcoats everyone" to show that blood is actually pouring out her thumb.

There is change in mood throughout the poem, such as the woman feeling thrill and excitement at the beginning of the poem, for example "Clutching my bottle of pink fizz, a celebration this is". Implying that she has just cracked open a bottle of champagne in celebration. The mood changes to self hatred, for example "Trepanned veteran, dirty girl". This shows that she is now angry at herself for chopping her thumb off.

My opinion on the poem "Cut" is I thought it was different and unusual, but at the same time I thought it was interesting with all the different techniques used such as using metaphors and similes to create images in your mind.
