Peter Pans Pineapples
One conflict i will be describing in Slumdog Millionaire by Danny
Boyle is between Jamal and the show host Prem Kumar. Prem is suspicious that
Jamal has been cheating all throughout the film and doesn’t want him to win the
20 million rupees and take out the show. Because Jamal is a Slumdog Prem doesn’t
believe he knew all the answers to the questions and that he somehow cheated.
Prem also doesn’t want to win because he was the only slum to win the game show,
and he wants to keep it that way. Prem gets the police to interigate Jamal and
torture him to make him spill the beans and make him confess to cheating.

One of the techniques used to show the conflict between Jamal and
Prem is cinematography. A mid shot is used in one of the first scenes when Jamal
and Prem are sitting opposite each other. It almost seems like bit of a show
down between the two. Because they are both on the same level, there is no real
superior man, yet. Another shot used is the close up. When there is a close up
on Jamal he doesn’t look that confident, he might be a little intimidated by
prem. when the close up shot goes to Prem he is always grinning and appears
like he’s in control of the conflict. He sees Jamal as a minor threat.

The contrast in acting style and dialogue of the two characters
shows the conflict between them. Prem Kumar is a very loud and outgoing person
who likes to get in your face with his intimidating character. Prem uses sarcasm
with Jamal in an insulting way by calling him a chai-wallah which is like a tea
boy, someone who takes tea and coffee orders. Prem is very confident in what he
does, with insulting Jamal. He calls him an assistant phone basher. Prem is
trying to be funny and insulting at the same time by mocking Jamal about his bad
job. This shows how Prem is intimidating Jamal and running over him.

A third technique used by the director to show the conflict
between is the sound track. In the opening scenes the tick tock sound is
creating a lot of tension by slowing the scene down and making it dramatic. The
start-up tune for who wants to be a millionaire creates a very dramatic scene
from when Jamal and Prem walk onto the set. There is already some of the
conflict happening even before the questions are answered. Another example of
tension and a build-up of suspension between Jamal and Prem is when Jamal has
locked in an answer and the music comes on while waiting for the answer. The
music builds up the scene and makes it come alive with its tension building and
the audience waiting in silence along with Jamal. Perms misleading face made it
look like the answer was wrong; this is saying Prem is trying to take all the
  confidence out of Jamal.

The conflict between Jamal and Prem helped me understand the main
idea that love will overcome all. Jamal has to overcome his childhood in the
slums and the conflict helped me understand this. All the questions Jamal got
asked made him refer back to his childhood and the horrible experiences he had
to face. All those experiences have linked back to the game show. the conflict
between Jamal and Prem helps me to understand the main idea of love will
overcome all by Prem asking Jamal questions that refer back to Jamal’s horrible
childhood.
